Our Approach to Assessments

We believe a diagnosis is not a label to limit potential, but a key to unlock it.

The Philosophy: Neurodiversity-Affirming Care

At My Mind Lab, we operate from a neurodiversity-affirming perspective. This means we view brains like Autism and ADHD not as "disorders" that need fixing, but as distinct neurotypes with their own unique strengths and challenges. Our assessments are designed to look beyond surface-level behaviors. We don't just ask "What is wrong?" We ask "How does this mind work?" and "What environment does this person need to thrive?"

The Methodology: Comprehensive & Evidence-Based

We use gold-standard clinical tools to ensure accuracy and acceptance by schools, universities, and government bodies (such as the NDIS). However, we combine this clinical rigour with a warm, human-centered atmosphere to ensure our clients feel safe and seen throughout the process.

Cognitive & Educational Assessments (IQ)

We map out a person's learning profile to understand their cognitive potential compared to their academic output. The Focus: Verbal reasoning, visual-spatial skills, fluid reasoning, working memory, and processing speed. The Goal: To identify Specific Learning Disorders (like Dyslexia or Dysgraphia), Intellectual Disability, or Giftedness. Tools often used: WISC-V (Children), WAIS-V (Adults)

ADHD & Executive Functioning

Attention is more than just "sitting still." We investigate how the brain regulates focus, impulses, and working memory. The Focus: We look at executive functioning skills—planning, organizing, emotional regulation, and task initiation. The Goal: To differentiate between anxiety, trauma, and true neurodevelopmental attention differences. Tools often used: Conners 4, DIVA-5 The Focus: Verbal reasoning, visual-spatial skills, fluid reasoning, working memory, and processing speed. The Goal: To identify Specific Learning Disorders (like Dyslexia or Dysgraphia), Intellectual Disability, or Giftedness. Tools often used: WISC-V (Children), WAIS-V (Adults)

Autism Spectrum Assessments

We explore social communication, sensory processing, and behavioral patterns. For Children: We use play-based observation and parent interviews to understand the child’s developmental history. For Adults: We focus on the lived experience, "masking" (the effort to fit in), and how social fatigue impacts daily life. Tools often used: MIGDAS-2, ADOS-2

The Outcome: A Roadmap, Not Just a Report

The most important part of our service is what happens after the testing. We pride ourselves on writing reports that are: Readable: Written in plain English, not medical jargon. Practical: Filled with actionable strategies for home, the classroom, and the workplace. Empowering: Focused on leveraging strengths to support areas of challenge. Services are available for Home, School, Organisation, Telehealth For Children: We use play-based observation and parent interviews to understand the child’s developmental history.
